Minutes of the Spring 2001 Ski Coaches Meeting

held at Eaglebrook School, 4/9/01

1) Review of the 2000-2001 Season

a) Convened 7:00 p.m.

2) Race Dates

There was some discussion concerning the number and dates of slalom and giant slalom races. People made arguments for and against starting the season with slalom, or with two GS races in a row, etc. The primary concerns were that

1) the EBS race at the end of the season would run smoother if it were a GS for all levels.

2) Varsity and JV/Juniors should race the same event on a given race day

Proposal: The Varsity and JV/Juniors should race the same event on a given race day.

Proposed schedule

A vote was taken (one vote per school) with 4 in favor and 5 against the proposal, thus the proposal did not pass.

The schedule and order of races will be similar to this past season’s.

We tabled discussion with regards to using a Friday as make-up day.

3) Scoring

a) By a vote of 8-1, the current scoring system will continue to be

4) Discussion of the number of schools in the MISL

Proposal: Limit the number of Varsity teams to one per gender per school.

This proposal was defeated by a vote of 1-7

Discussion:

· Skiers should ski at the right level. (MHK)

· Perhaps some Varsity teams should drop to JV.

· Other Varsity teams (in other sports) only field one squad. Is it fair to do this (have more than one team) in skiing? (NMH)

· More teams at the JV/Junior level. Possibly Greenfield Middle School, Hadley Elementary. This would also increase our income. (MHK)

5) Coaches Role and Gatekeeping Issues

· Coaches meeting before each race helped in the running of the race

· Do we want to assign gates to each school?

· Are there sanctions for not providing gatekeepers?

· Educate all skiers on how to gatekeep properly.

· Only need gatekeepers for the JV/Junior course and they should meet at the bottom and hike up.

· More adult gatekeepers required for the slalom races.

· Radio system worked well.
